Honu at Kiholo Bay—Collage (Composite Image)

The lagoon at Kiholo Bay on the Kona Coast of Hawaii island is home to honu (Hawaiian sea turtles).  Freshwater seeps into the still waters of the lagoon creating thermoclines that turn the water a milky cyan color.  Honu (chelonia mydas) are native to the Hawaiian Islands and are a threatened species.

  1. Honu bask in the sun on an old pahoephoe lava flow while others swim in the lagoon.

  2. The shells of juvenile honu have a starburst pattern on the plates of their shells.

  3. The shells of large honu change as they grow into mature adults.
