Kolea in Lo’i Kalo

A Kolea, the Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva), enjoys the lo’i kalo at Limahuli Garden as the waters of the ‘auwai (irrigation systen) splash from one level of terraces to another. Indigenous migratory birds such as the Kolea fly to Hawaii from the Arctic each winter and are believed to be the primary means by which new species reached Hawai’i.
