Nuuanu Waterfalls

Posted: October 23, 2007

There are soothing waterfalls within 2 miles of the heart of downtown Honolulu.  Up in the cool higher sections of Nuuanu Valley, near the ruins of Kaniakapupu–the summer home of Kamehameha III–waterfalls plunge off cliffs into pools at their base.

Lulumahu Falls

Hidden in a gully behind the Nuuanu Reservoir, Lulumahu Falls is fed by ground water from Konahuanui, the highest peak on the Koolau Mountains.  Rainfall on the summit seeps into the groundwater and emerges decades later from the mountain as a spring that feeds this waterfall.

Ferns, hau and kukui trees thrive along side a charming waterfall at the base of the Nuuanu Pali along the Likeke Trail.
