Native Hawaiian Christmas Wreath

Posted: December 22, 2007

I was thrilled when Brian Choy asked me to photograph a Christmas wreath he created that could have been made in old Hawaii.  It is made entirely with native and Polynesian-introduced flowers and foliage.

Brian Choy has been making exquisite leis and wreaths since the mid-1970′s.

This wreath is made with material available to the Hawaiians prior to the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands by the West.  It is made with:  (1) red lehua flowers, buds, and calyxes (2) red ti leaves, (3) green koa leaves, (4) green ohia leaves, (5) green ulei leaves, and (6) green ti leaves.

Here is a photo of the same native Hawaiian Christmas wreath but from a different more oblique angle.
