I was with great anticipation that I went to photograph a Hawaiian kahakai wreath made by Brian Choy for the holidays. “Kahakai” means the sea coast in Hawaiian. This is a kahakai wreath because it is made entirely with material gathered along the beaches and shorelines of Hawaii.
Brian Choy has been making award-winning leis and wreaths since the mid-1970’s.

This kahakai wreath is made with: (1) sea urchin shells bleached white by the sun, (2) driftwood, (3) yellow kauna’oa vines, (4) green milo leaves and fruit, (5) green pohinahina leaves and berries, (6) green naupaka leaves, and (7) green heliotrope berries.

Here is a photo of the same native Hawaiian Christmas wreath but from a different more oblique angle.
