
I hiked along the middle reaches of Wailuku River, the largest river in Hawaii which flows 26-miles down the slopes of Mauna Kea into Hilo Bay, to see the plants and animals that live halfway up the river.
I hiked through a series of kipuka on the old Pu’u O’o Trail off the Saddle Road to see the native forest birds that live at 5,500 feet elevation on the slopes of Mauna Kea.
Over the Memorial Day weekend, I hiked the Upper Hamakua Ditch Trail at the end of White Road in Waimea that follows a ditch system along the edge of Waipio Valley in the Kohala District of Hawaii Island.
